Why is play so important to learning?

Play is of critical importance in the healthy development of children.  A wide selection of activities such as songs, games, and model building helps children to explore science and math in a playful environment without pressure of tests or grades.

How does HOS encourage inquiry?

HOS's inquiry approach to teaching turns ownership of the learning over to its participants.  Each student is encouraged to seek information about various concepts by asking questions and looking for answers.

Children develop critical thinking skills when a knowledgeable adult facilitates the asking of questions that will stimulate ideas and respect their ability to think. HOS activity guides include carefully constructed questions for adults to pose during class.

Class leaders are trained to encourage inquiry and discovery.  Take home materials include brief questions that involve parents and spark further science discussion at home.

“My daughter will go out now and try anything. I give HOS some credit for improving her observation skills and making her willing to take on more challenges, and to try new things.”

“When I arrive home from work on the day my son attends class, he immediately tells me what experiment he performed. Then we do it again!  Even my 2 year old is clammering to “do science.”
